Originally an experiment in landscaping which passed down the generations of the Dukes of Atholl, some 27 million conifers were planted on this site and the surrounding hills between 1738 and 1830.
The “Planting Dukes”, as they became known, sowed the seeds of several record breaking trees including the largest girth Douglas Fir and the tallest Red Fir. The grounds of Dunkeld House are home to a growing collection of some of the world’s rarest conifers.
The iCONic Project is working to establish conservation collections of threatened species and at Dunkeld you can see young plantings from around the globe.
